Summer So far
Whats' growing out at Kelsea's farm and upcoming workshops
Whats growing out at Kelsea’s farm.
Summer is officially underway, and while it has been a very wet start to the season, we’re excited to see everything beginning to grow and take shape.
Our sister, Kelsea, who is also an owner here at Jenny Lou’s Greenery, has been hard at work planting this year’s garden. She has planted a large variety of dahlias, cosmos, stock, Bells of Ireland, bachelor’s buttons, gladiolus, nigella, sweet corn, multiple varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, and pumpkins.
Some of our flowers are already making an appearance. The nigella, bachelor's buttons, and a few varieties of cosmos have begun blooming, giving us a little preview of all the beauty that's still to come.
Beyond the flower fields and vegetable gardens, her peach trees and grapevines continue to return stronger every year. One of the biggest improvements this season is a better irrigation system to help manage watering throughout the summer, along with plans for a stronger fence to keep wildlife at bay. Last year sweet corn was only a few days away from being ready to harvest when, overnight, the entire patch disappeared thanks to some very determined raccoons. It's become one of those farming stories we can laugh about now, but we're certainly hoping for a different outcome this year.
She also welcomed more ducks to the property this spring. Added eight new ducks, a few with beautiful speckled chests that were born in March, bringing her total flock to 12. They've become quite the personalities around the farm and have especially grown to enjoy the company of her 4 children.
As always, farming, flowers, and growing things come with plenty of surprises, but that's part of what makes each season so special. Stay tuned for Kelsea's fresh-cut flowers arriving in the shop next month, along with more flower field and garden updates from the farm. We're also excited to share more happenings and dining experiences out at the farm throughout the season. We can't wait to bring you along for another beautiful summer at Jenny Lou's Greenery.
